Most study abroad guides written about Ghana carry figures from 2023 or earlier, when Ghana's UK visa approval rate was considerably stronger. The 2026 picture is different, and if you are applying this year, you need to know what the data actually shows.
Ghana is still a country from which thousands of students successfully obtain UK and Canadian study visas every year. An 83% approval rate means most well-prepared applicants get through. But the margin for a weak application has narrowed, and the documentation bar has risen. This guide gives you the accurate starting point and tells you what to do with it.
The UK Home Office publishes immigration statistics quarterly. The year ending March 2026 figures, released in May 2026, show Ghana's sponsored study visa refusal rate at 16.72%. This makes Ghana the highest-refusal major source market for UK sponsored study in that period, ahead of Pakistan at 15.98% and Bangladesh at 14.13%.
For comparison, the overall average refusal rate across all nationalities for sponsored study visas was 4.74%. Nigeria came in at 10.34% for the same period.
What does a 16.72% refusal rate mean practically? Roughly 83 out of every 100 Ghanaian student visa applications are approved. That is still a majority, but it means the Home Office is rejecting a meaningfully larger share of Ghanaian applications than it was 12 months ago, and the reasons below explain why.
The Home Office does not publish a detailed breakdown of refusal reasons by nationality. But from published UKVI guidance and the wider pattern of what has driven refusal rates up across multiple source markets, the main factors are consistent:
None of these are specific to Ghana. They apply to all nationalities. But the aggregate data shows they are appearing with higher frequency in Ghanaian applications than before.
The higher refusal rate makes preparation more important, not less. A well-documented application from Ghana still has roughly an 83% chance of approval. Here is what strong preparation looks like:
Canada introduced a cap on new international study permit approvals in January 2024, reducing total approvals by approximately 35% compared to 2023. The cap remains active for 2026. This applies to all nationalities, not just specific countries.
There is no fast-track process available for Ghanaian applicants. The Student Direct Stream was permanently closed by IRCC in November 2024. All Ghanaian students now go through the standard study permit process.
Canada's proof of funds requirement for 2026 is CAD $22,895 for living expenses plus your first year's tuition. For a university charging CAD $20,000 in tuition, you need to demonstrate approximately CAD $42,895 in accessible funds. This must be documented convincingly, not just shown as a single large balance.
Ghanaian students have strong representation at several UK universities. Some of the institutions that regularly admit Ghanaian applicants include the University of Bedfordshire, Northumbria University, the University of Hertfordshire, Anglia Ruskin University, and the University of Salford. These post-92 universities tend to have more established pipelines for Ghanaian applicants and generally have admissions teams familiar with Ghanaian qualifications.
For Canada, Memorial University of Newfoundland, the University of Manitoba, and Brandon University are among the most accessible in terms of tuition cost. Confirm your specific institution's current IRCC DLI status before applying.

All visa fee figures above are verified from UKVI guidance as of June 2026. The visa fee increased to £558 in April 2026. Always confirm current figures on the UKVI website before making any payment.
The UKVI living cost requirement for 2026 is £1,023 per month outside London and £1,334 per month in London, for up to 9 months. This gives a total maintenance requirement of £9,207 (outside London) or £12,006 (London).
You must hold the required maintenance funds plus any outstanding tuition in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before you submit your application. The bank statement must be dated within 31 days of your visa application date.
If a parent or guardian is funding your studies, their bank statement must accompany a signed sponsor letter, your birth certificate (or evidence of the relationship), and evidence of their income source. Accounts belonging to siblings, uncles, aunts, or friends are not accepted.
Verify all application deadlines directly with each scholarship provider. Deadlines change year to year, and carrying over a deadline from a previous guide is a common mistake that costs applicants their opportunity.
