Step 1 of 2 — How much can you pay upfront?
Yes, if you have successfully completed a UK degree at a licensed higher education institution, you can apply to stay in the UK and work for up to two years after graduation through the Graduate Route visa. PhD graduates get three years. No job offer is required. No sponsorship needed. You can work in virtually any role, at any skill level, including self-employment.
The Graduate Route is one of the most flexible immigration routes the UK offers, and for Nigerian graduates it represents a genuine opportunity to build UK work experience, establish professional networks, and potentially secure the employer sponsorship that leads to long-term settlement. This guide covers the official eligibility requirements, exact costs, application process, work rights, and the critical deadline change coming in January 2027.
⚠️ Important 2027 deadline: The Graduate Route visa duration is changing. If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you get 2 years (3 years for PhDs). If you apply on or after 1 January 2027, bachelor's and master's graduates get only 18 months. This change was confirmed by the Home Office in October 2025 and is now law. If your graduation is in 2026, plan your application timeline carefully.
The Graduate Route (sometimes called the Post-Study Work visa) is a UK immigration route that allows international students who have completed an eligible degree at a UK higher education institution to remain in the UK to work, look for work, or be self-employed, without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship. It was reintroduced in 2021 (having been abolished in 2012) and has become one of the most used post-study routes for international graduates.
The Graduate Route is a bridging visa. It does not lead directly to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR/settlement). Its purpose is to give you time in the UK to find qualifying employment, gain experience, and transition to a long-term visa route, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, which does lead toward permanent residency.

The visa length is determined by your application date, not your course start date or graduation date. If you complete your degree in mid-2026 but do not apply until January 2027, you will receive only 18 months. For most Nigerian graduates finishing undergraduate or master's degrees in 2026, applying as early as possible after graduation, and certainly before 31 December 2026, secures the full two-year permission.
The Graduate Route cannot be extended. You can only hold Graduate Route permission once in your lifetime. When it expires, you must either switch to another visa (such as a Skilled Worker visa) or leave the UK.

No financial evidence required. Unlike the student visa, you do not need to show proof of funds (bank statements held for 28 days) when applying for the Graduate Route. You must be able to support yourself in the UK without recourse to public funds, but the Home Office does not set a specific financial threshold or require bank statements as part of this application.
Priority service is not available for Graduate Route applications. You cannot pay for faster processing. Apply well before your student visa expires to ensure you are not left in a gap.
The Graduate Route removes virtually all the restrictions that apply under the student visa:

You can work in any job at any level, from entry-level roles to senior professional positions. There is no minimum salary requirement. You can also take multiple jobs simultaneously, work part-time or full-time, and switch roles freely without notifying the Home Office. This flexibility is a significant advantage for building a CV and exploring industries while in the UK.

If you secure a qualifying job offer from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa. This is the most common long-term route for Nigerian graduates who want to remain in the UK. Current requirements include:
After 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), though the government is reforming this timeline (see below). After ILR, you can apply for British citizenship after a further 12 months.
If you graduated from one of the top-ranked universities on the UK government's Global Universities List within the last five years, you may be eligible for the HPI visa, a 2-year (or 3-year for PhDs) work visa that does not require a job offer. Note: a cap of 8,000 applications per year was introduced in November 2025. Check current availability.
For graduates who can demonstrate exceptional talent or promise in academia, research, digital technology, arts, or design, the Global Talent visa offers an endorsement-based route to long-term residency. Highly competitive, but leads to settlement faster than most routes.
If you want to pursue a higher degree (e.g., move from a bachelor's to a master's, or from a master's to a PhD), you can switch back to a Student visa from within the UK if you hold a new CAS from a licensed institution.
The UK government is in the process of reforming ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) through an "Earned Settlement" model. The government consulted on these proposals from late 2025 to February 2026, and the standard qualifying period is expected to increase from 5 years to 10 years for most sponsored workers, with reductions available for those who make an early positive contribution. As of this writing, the official response to the consultation and final rules have not yet been published, so the current 5-year qualifying period still applies. Applicants and long-term planners should monitor GOV.UK for the outcome. The Graduate Route period does not count toward ILR. The clock starts from when you switch to a qualifying settlement route, such as Skilled Worker.
Yes. Nigerian nationality is not a barrier to the Graduate Route. Any international student who completes an eligible UK degree at a licensed higher education institution while on a valid Student visa can apply, regardless of nationality. You must apply from within the UK while your student visa is still valid.
No. This is one of the key advantages of the Graduate Route. You do not need a job offer, a sponsoring employer, or any specific salary level. You apply based on having completed your degree. You then use the visa period to find work and build your career.

Yes. Unlike the student visa, the Graduate Route permits self-employment, freelancing, running a business, and working at any skill level. This is a significant expansion of your work rights compared to the student visa.
Not directly. The Graduate Route is a temporary visa and does not count toward ILR. To move toward permanent residency, you must switch to a qualifying long-term route (typically Skilled Worker) before your Graduate visa expires. ILR is currently available after 5 years on most qualifying routes, though the government is consulting on extending this to 10 years for most migrants. If your student visa expires before you apply, you lose eligibility for the Graduate Route entirely. You cannot apply from outside the UK or after your permission has expired. This is the most common, and most avoidable, reason Nigerian graduates miss out on the Graduate Route. Apply before your student visa expires, giving yourself at least 4–6 weeks of buffer.
The Home Office aims to decide Graduate Route applications within 8 weeks. Many straightforward applications are decided faster. Priority service is not available for this route, so you cannot pay for faster processing. Apply early. Do not wait until a few days before your student visa expires.
Yes, if your dependants (partner or children) are already in the UK as dependants on your student visa, they can apply for leave to remain as Graduate Route dependants. Each dependant pays the same £937 application fee plus the IHS at £1,035 per year. Note: only PhD and research-based postgraduate students could bring dependants on their original student visa (this restriction was introduced in 2024); master's and undergraduate students cannot bring new dependants.
